I'm Done!

So this is my final project design of the semester. I'm undecided on whether or not I like the design. I like things that are more detailed, but I'm glad that I tried something different. Craft for this project was very hard, major props to all of the students who mocked up their projects neatly. During the critique, it was suggested that I limit the amount of pencils used and either take out the rounded turtles or try and make them more geometrical. Below is an image of the design and layout of my final project.

I like the looks of it!

So even though, I wasted alot of time searching for the perfect template, I finally started the design. I have to say that this is some of my best work. I'm still worried about how the box will turn out, but knowing that I have a design gives me comfort. At the bottom I have posted some of my designs in progress.

More package redesign ideas. Why can't I make up my mind already?

I am going to repackage some DIXON pencils. Although pencils aren't the most exciting thing to package, at least they are small. The specific type that I will be repackaging will be the multicolored pack. It will be packaged in a box with a viewer that will be in the shape of an animal and the pencils themselves with be the color of the animal.

Update:
If I have time I want to package two pencil sets. One set will be targeted towards children, while the other will be targeted towards adults. The children's set will feature a a box that opens from the middle. The box design will consist of a turtle and some scenery that imitates the rainforest. This package will come with a card insert of a turtle and information regarding its habitat. On the back of the box will be more information on how buying this pack of pencils will help save the rainforest. For example "With every purchase of Dixon multicolored pencils 10% or 10 cents will be donated to help save an animal in the rainforest." The adult pencil set will feature a top and bottom box similar to jewelry box. The color scheme will be black and white or green and white. The front of the box will say Dixon and made with 100% wood. The box design will look like tree carvings or the texture of tree trunks. All pencils in both pencil sets will be sharpened.

Package Redesign Ideas

I think that I will redesign a package from the food, household appliances, or office supplies industries. I want the product to have a freebie in it, so that the consumers will prefer this company over the alternatives. I also want the packaging to be reusable to store other things in. If I do a food item, I want  the packaging to somehow limit the consumers consumption so that they won't overeat.

Update:
I think that I want to redesign a BiC multi color pen. I love having a variety of choices for color and whenever I get one of these pens I get really excited. It could come with a pack of sticky notes or a keychain.

Final Book Cover

Even though I had some craft issues I am still so impressed by the finished book cover. Suggestions from the critique were to use a thin yellow stroke around the images, reduce the images to 80%, add space (between the brain, memories, and author's name), take the stroke off of the titles, and to  reduce the text size of the reviews on the back. My personal suggestions are to add something on the spine (either the brain or the publisher's logo) and to change the color of the spine to a lighter blue like the flaps.

Book Cover Ideas Update

So my book cover concept will be a large brain with a circle or square around the aneurysm. Either on top or surrounding this brain will be 4-5 scenes of memories. Possible memories include: the main character driving a fast car, flying in an airplane, meeting his son, falling down a mountain, and running from the Death Angels. All of these memories will be fading.

Final Poster

This is my event poster for the Celebrate Freedom concert at Jim R. Miller Park. I'm very surprised with how this poster turned out. I'm glad that I explored with color finally! I really wish that I used some effects and experimented with perspective tools.

Critique:
- Newsboys could be moved over to the left.
- The bottom text could be larger because there is a lot of space between the ribbon and performance information.
- The color of the hand drawn type could be changed to yellow instead of red.
- Move the website url up, it's too close to the bottom.

Three down two projects left to go.

Project updates ....

 Event Poster

So far I'm really liking the feel of my event poster. I need to redraw the ribbons and the artists' names and add a couple of things to the lower part of the poster. The mac I'm using right now is being awkward.
It won't let me save this file as a png so you get a jpeg instead. Also some of the fonts have reverted back to default because the mac I'm using doesn't have the font. One of the things that's been annoying me is that the fish logo isn't a png and so I can't get rid of the white. When I tried to get rid of it the fish disappears.

This isn't my final poster, but it's the general layout and concept.

Book Cover

I want to make a book cover for the book Kill Me. I love suspense and action and this one definitely has a lot of that. The cover is really plain; it's just the title in big white letters with a bullet passing through it which is a real shame because it is a really interesting book.
My first concept is to lay out the main character's personal items. I think that this would be an easy way to give the reader an idea of who the main character is and show that he is preparing for something big. You never find out his name so I guess I want to give the reader a quick way to connect with the main character. The way the book is arranged, the main character is telling his psychiatrist his story and why his live for today attitude has gotten him into trouble. So this story is basically his last will and testament. Another idea would be to incorporate the fact that the main character lives a double life. He frequently flies to different cities to talk with his psychiatrist and the "Death Angels" and then flies back home so that he can be around his family. My third idea is showing the character's growth throughout the book. At the beginning he leads a pretty carefree and reckless life. However, after his friend's accident he's shaken up and a lot more aware of the inevitability of death. After he signs the contract with the Death Angels he's very paranoid and alert at all times because he knows that they're coming after him and because he has a son, daughter, and wife whom he now realizes need him.

Final concept design

The concept that I will use for my event poster is day and night coming together as a microphone with stars and rays coming out from the center. This signifies that Celebrate Freedom Atlanta is an all day event and that it includes many concerts throughout the day. It's another simple concept, but I have to start somewhere. All that's left to do is fix the arrangement and size of the composition, add more variety to the color scheme, and find the right typefaces for the text.

Event Poster Concept Ideas

For our third project I intend on creating an event poster for Celebrate Freedom Atlanta. This event is hosted by 104.7 the fish and it is all day event. The day begins with a 5k/10k run and ends with fireworks! Other fun activities planned for the day include: concerts, a bmx bike show, and activities for the children. Since I'm not the best illustrator, I was thinking about working on typographical elements as well as color. My first idea is a poster that shows the schedule of activities for the day in a maze. There will be an arrow that says start here and one that says end here. In between the arrows, will be the name and time of each activity. The bottom will have sponsors and who it's hosted by.  Another idea would be a combination of a city and patriotic themed poster. "Celebrate Freedom" would be in all caps and the letters would be filled with patriotic symbols. Atlanta would be in white at the bottom and a silhouette of the city of Atlanta with fireworks would be in the background. The last idea I have involves words again. It would say "Celebrate fun, Celebrate family, Celebrate Freedom Atlanta!"

Saw this at Ponce on the way to GSU

My first reaction to this ad was great another ad about buying gold, especially because of the large gold sandwich wrapper that reminded me of a gold bar. However, when I got closer, I noticed that the billboard was actually advertising Chipotle Mexican Grill. The restaurant was trying to call attention to its Food With Integrity mission and 18th anniversary.  I didn't really like the text, but I like the concept. Here is a link to the website  Chipotle Goes For The Gold.

Adidas final ads

My biggest enemy was time. As usual, time put a huge strain on my work. That being said, I really like the concept that I came up with and if I had more time I believe I would love how the designs turned out as well. In their present state I think they meet the project requirements, but they need tweaking. My favorite ad was the 3x10 ad of the graffiti artist. It was the easiest to make, but I really regret not being able to add the dripping paint to it. Although this project was shorter, I liked it a lot more than the logo project. It's harder to make a design that represents yourself.

Well, two projects down three more to go!

Adidas Ad Concept

I've been really slow about getting ideas for the project because Adidas targets all consumers and offers a large variety of products. After collecting a ton of pictures I have two ideas. One idea is to have each ad target a different type of people. The subject of the ads will be a musician, an athlete, and an artist. Another concept would be to hint at the global impact that Adidas has as well as their diversity. Instead of using a picture of the world, there would be a huge sneaker in the middle of the ad and different people would be placed around the shoe displaying their passion and love for the shoe.

Concepts:
- 3 different lifestyles  represented
    Tagline: My style .....
                  My passion ....
                  My gameface ....  etc

My adidas / Adidas ....  Where all three unite

- Adidas globally united
Sorry no taglines yet

Adidas

The company I've decided to design ads for is Adidas. Right now they've launched their newest and biggest campaign "Adidas is all in." I don't really like their tagline so I'm thinking of making a new one. However I do like what the campaign represents. Adidas knows that today's consumers "are not one-dimensional" so they are trying to create a brand in which all can feel represented all while celebrating the things that make us similar; our passion for sports, music, and fashion. Feel free to watch some of their commercials that I posted below.

Project # 2 Ideas

My first thoughts about this project were to choose a company that is affiliated with music because I really enjoy music and the artwork on cds. However, I feel like it would be hard to find a company that has a good campaign and style. So then I started looking at companies that make several things so that I wouldn't be limited to one product. I'm posting some companies and products that I'm thinking of using for this project.

P&G - picked it for the variety of products it offers
Kraft - picked it for variety and because I love cheese
Wrigley - I love gum, even though I've only had 1 piece in the last three months, must be all that running. Also funny commercials.
Sharpie - really interesting campaigns and style
Adidas - I really like their shoes. Not so fond of the musicians in their ads but when you're up against Nike what can you do?
Gatorade - its been overused so I'm really hesitant
RATP trains - chose it for humor, but also because I ride public transportation.

These are some of the ads that I liked. Enjoy!

First Project: Personal Logo

These are the final pieces I turned in for the first project. Mounting and the color scheme could have been better, but not a bad start to the semester.

New Color Schemes

These are some of the color schemes I made up in class. Still looking for more appealing combinations. I may just go back to the beginning and take some inspiration from the vh1 logo.

Logo Update and Pantone Colors

So I finally finished tracing my logo designs into Illustrator and by the way it wasn't easy. I think I'm finally getting the hang of the pen tool. I think I might work some more on the m and k in the first logo.

Next order of business: color schemes, yes I keep blogging about adding color, but sadly I only have one example for each and it ain't pretty. However, I do like the idea of using the different shades of a color within the logo. I'm going to do some more experimenting and research on color schemes because they both look plain.

New Logo Designs

So I still need a color scheme for the logos. For the first logo I was thinking bright, fun, and playful colors. For the second I want to use blue and white to emphasize the theme of water.

Illustrative logo
I still need to work on this logo, but so far this is my favorite version of "The Kicking Z".

Illustrative logo
I may use the "k" off of this logo and add it to the logo before this one. However, it's highly unlikely because I like "The running K," but who knows, it might be the best version that I come up with.

Typographic logo
I quickly sketched this beauty in the middle of class. I know I shouldn't be doing homework in class, but I was disappointed with all of the other typographic logos that I had sketched out. That wasn't my only motive for sketching new logos. I also felt like I had spent so much time working on my illustrative logo that I had totally neglected my other logo. I feel like this logo does me justice because the other stuff was hard to differentiate between the "z" and "m."

I'd like to personally thank Paige Taylor for giving us an extension for this logo project.
Thanks A Million!

It's Wednesday

So it's Wednesday and I didn't get much done. I started playing with fonts in Illustrator, before class and during class. I also tried to understand how to use the pen tool. Hopefully by the end of the day I'll have both logos sketched out. I look forward to Thursday at 5:30 pm; the beginning of my weekend.

Personal Logo Sketches

As of Thursday, these are all the sketches I have for my personal logo. Hopefully, by Tuesday I'll have revised logos with color schemes.

Look what I found!

So I was online looking at all of the top stories on Yahoo and I found this article about logos and hidden images. I never knew that Tostitos had a hidden image. Anyway enjoy!

3 Good Logos 1 Bad

The four logos that I shared in class today.

Good Logo

I like this logo because it comes together niclely. The font is pleasing without taking too much attention from the picture and the picture was edited and positioned in such a way that it doesn't take away from the text below it. The picture of the bear translates the title of the company; Karhu, which is Finnish for bear. Hidden within the bear is a mountain, which is significant because Karhu sells sporting equipment.
Good Logo
The colors on this logo mesmerize me. I stopped watching tv a while ago so this new vh1 logo took me by surprise when I saw it. I like the idea of making the logo a 3D shape, to me it represents the new directions that they are taking with their channel. Although it's a music channel I'm pretty sure that they play movies as well.

Good Logo
From the moment I saw this logo I loved it. I guess it also helped that the type of PCs that they make are well designed and quite efficient. The hidden binary numbers (1 and 0) were a clever idea and the overall flow of the logo makes me think of something futuristic.

BAD LOGO!!!
It's too simple. I prefer logos that are complex or have a double meaning. I looked up the origin of the Arm and Hammer name on Wikipedia and I was shocked to find out that they named their company after Vulcan the Roman god of fire and metalworking. Another explanation for why their logo looks so plain is because they've been around since 1867.
